Second Story

Playing a Landmark

We turned a forgotten fountain into an interactive instrument for the public to play.

Lawrence Halprin’s outdoor spaces are architectural masterpieces hidden in plain sight. We wanted to help our city rediscover these places, so we turned Lovejoy Fountain into a visual and musical sculpture that passersby could play using a mysterious mixing console.

With every touch, people painted the fountain with light and sound, transforming this overlooked gem into a spontaneous, collaborative public performance.

The power of this project was its ability to shine light on one of the most unknown, yet most iconic public spaces in Portland. It is diverse, playful, experiential, lean and spurred movement through the route of Halprin's stunning work of art.
