econd Story creates its interactive features from the top floor of a renovated industrial warehouse with collaborative work spaces, a screening room and a technology lab for experimentation, prototyping and testing. The studio’s eclectic team of creative artists, producers, writers, animators, and programmers is dedicated to educating, entertaining, and inspiring audiences through storytelling innovation.


Brad Johnson
CREATIVE DIRECTOR. With a background in philosophy and fine arts, Brad turned his focus to interactive media in 1994 when he created “Pinch,” an award-winning multimedia mailer for a fictitious clothespin company. His creative leadership guides the studio’s work, from concept development to the implementation of site architecture and visual aesthetics. Brad has a B.A. in Philosophy from Washington and Lee University.

Matt Arnold
VISUALIZATION ENGINEER. With a strong engineering, design, and modeling background, Matt’s contributions to projects include Flash programming, animation and 3D media development. Before coming to Second Story, Matt’s experience has been in the design and research of industrial, mobile and planetary robotics. Matt has a B.S. in Mechanical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University.

David Brewer
LEAD SYSTEMS DEVELOPER. David provides client and server side programming solutions for studio projects. He has over seven years of experience with Web technologies. Since joining Second Story he has specialized in the creation of collection databases, web-based administrative consoles for managing them, and the front-end systems used to present them. David has a B.S. with honors in Computer Science from Linfield College.

Amber Cartwright
PRODUCER.With eight years of interactive experience, Amber’s skills range from project management to motion graphics and user experience design. Prior to Second Story, Amber worked at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Time.com, and TeenPeople.com. She has a BFA in Dance from East Carolina University and a Master’s degree from the Interactive Telecommunications Program at NYU.

Erica Dillon
ASSISTANT PRODUCER. Drawing on her extensive experience as a researcher, editor, and writer as well as her work on digital literary archives, Erica facilitates the development of high-quality content for projects and provides support to producers throughout all project phases. Her interests in philosophy, literature, and information architecture have informed her previous roles as a writing instructor, freelance copyeditor, and Web content manager. Erica graduated magna cum laude in Modern Culture and Media from Brown University, and received a Master's degree in English from Stanford University.

Vance Feldman
JUNIOR INTERACTIVE DEVELOPER. For over ten years, Vance has juggled many forms of artistic media, including painting, programming, 3D design, and animation. For the award-winning Performance Environment Design Group he applied a number of real-time interactive video technologies for events including a Beastie Boys tour and NFL Kickoff '07. A graduate of Reed College in Portland, Oregon, Vance’s B.A. thesis consisted of a five-piece gallery installation of hyper-composed digital animations. His contributions to Second Story include Flash programming, assisting the development of video installations and reactive environments, and 3D programming and design.

Michael J Godfrey
INTERACTIVE DEVELOPER. Michael comes to Second Story with a diverse background in creating web applications, brand sites, informational graphics and illustration. He has worked at the Minneapolis Star Tribune and VO2 Media in Minnesota, Editora Moderna in São Paulo, Brazil, jung+pfeffer in Bremen, Germany and opus:creative in Portland, OR. Michael has a B.F.A. in Design from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design with an emphasis on Interactive Design.

Erica Hassinger
DESIGNER. Erica has eight years of experience in both interactive and print design, seamlessly integrating typography and image with creative, intuitive interfaces. Prior to Second Story she has worked at print, interactive and motion studios, creating tailored solutions for brands such as American Airlines, adidas and Folgers, as well as local fine arts and educational institutions. She holds a B.F.A. with honors in Graphic Design from Iowa State University.

Kieran Lynn
INTERACTION DESIGNER. Kieran brings to Second Story his experience in design, typography, illustration, and usability. His studies in philosophy, and popular culture inform his contributions to concept development, interface design and content visualization. Before coming to Second Story he consulted with small businesses, non-profits and cultural institutions on how to utilize design to accomplish long term objectives. Kieran has a degree in Multimedia Design from the University of Oregon with an emphasis on the social applications of design.

Melissa Paugh
ASSISTANT PRODUCER. Melissa brings over six years of experience in exhibit and interactive development, for museum audiences. Before coming to Second Story she was an Exhibit Developer at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, leading content research and project development for several large exhibitions. Melissa has a BA in Anthropology from Penn State University with honors in English.

Thomas Wester
TECHNOLOGY DIRECTOR. With over six years of experience in Web development and classic programming, Thomas provides a broad range of programming skills. As a co-founder of Rubberduck he developed Screenweaver, a popular product that extends the capabilities of Flash, allowing programmers to build robust applications. Thomas has a B.E. from Hogeschool van Utrecht, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

Julie Beeler
STUDIO DIRECTOR. Julie oversees and directs all aspects of the studio’s development process, including client relations, site architecture, programming, production, and visual design. Prior to Second Story, she provided art direction and production management for Monnens-Addis, in San Francisco. A frequent speaker at interactive media conferences and art schools, Julie holds a B.F.A. with honors in Graphic Design and Art History from the University of the Pacific.

Christian Bannister
INTERACTION DESIGNER. Christian has been conceptualizing and building interactive projects for over ten years. Working with brands like Zildjian, Bose, Lexus, Alpine, West Coast Choppers and Autodesk he has had the opportunity to innovate and help push the boundaries of the industry. Christian has a background in music composition, performance and production that informs his design and development efforts. His research involves exploring new interfaces to sound and music production. Christian holds an MFA from UCLA department of Design | Media Arts.

Jeremy Brown
JUNIOR INTERACTIVE DEVELOPER. With experience in programming, sound design, and motion graphics, Jeremy brings to Second Story an array of self-cultivated skills. In 2003, while operating a small recording studio, his interests turned from analog to computerized composition, and soon after to Flash programming. He now moderates the Flex & ActionScript 3 portion of the online community Goto+Play.net. Jeremy brings wide-ranging knowledge of object-oriented programming and application frameworks to his Flash development and user interface programming.

Alberto Cerriteño
DESIGN DIRECTOR. Alberto has over 15 years’ experience in graphic design, having created diverse print, interactive, animation, and environmental work in a wide range of areas including marketing, advertising, and education. Alberto began his career in Mexico, and previously ran his own design firm offering interactive and Web design services. He has received numerous accolades during his career and his personal art and illustration is exhibited in galleries and featured publications around the world. At Second Story, Alberto helps forge the creative vision and plan the execution of the studio’s diverse interactive media projects, in addition to leading and mentoring the studio design team. Alberto obtained his B.A. in Graphic Design at the Universidad del Valle de Mexico, Campus Lomas Verdes.

Shane Farrell
ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT. Shane provides administrative support to the Second Story team. She spent three years freelancing in film and television production in New York City and owned her own retail business in Montpelier, Vermont. Shane has a degree in Spanish Language and Literature from the University of Oregon.

Matt Goddard
LAN ADMINISTRATOR. Matt brings a decade of hardware and software experience to Second Story and ties together a diverse range of systems and applications to keep things running smoothly in the studio. He began his career in London, administering the local network at an audiovisual sales company, and later moved to the U.S., heading the external systems department at a Washington, D.C., marketing firm. He holds a B.A. with honors in English from the University of Luton, UK.

Jennifer Guibord
PRODUCER. Jennifer's role at Second Story is to lead all aspects of projects and serve as the primary liaison between the client and the in-house teams to orchestrate, coordinate, schedule and manage projects through every phase of development. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology from the St. Lawrence University, she went to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, where she gained experience in collections management, exhibits, education and research assistance.

Martin Linde
MEDIA & INTERACTION DESIGNER. With experience in motion graphics, animation, design and illustration, Martin brings a diverse set of design and development skills to Second Story. Before joining Second Story, Martin worked as an interactive designer for several studios in Minneapolis. Martin earned a B.F.A. with honors in Interactive Multimedia from the Minneapolis College of Art & Design, where he received several awards for excellence in artistic and academic achievement.

Oliver McGinnis
JUNIOR INTERACTIVE DEVELOPER. Oliver brings a background in art and design to his role as an interactive Flash programmer. Before joining Second Story, Oliver worked as an interactive designer and developer for a full-service marketing agency in Burlington, Vermont, and spent time in San Francisco as a freelance developer. Oliver holds a B.S. in Finance from the University of Vermont and a B.S. with honors in Multimedia and Graphic Design from Champlain College.

Jamal Qutub
DIRECTOR OF TIME-BASED MEDIA. Jamal Qutub has over 10 years of experience in digital media as a motion/interactive designer, 2-D/3-D animator, and editor. As Director of Time-Based media, Jamal oversees all aspects of video development and animation, and is lead editor on several projects including the Library of Congress and the Grammy Museum.

STUDIO NAPPER. Dola spends her days at Second Story following small patches of sunlight.

RESIDENT RIDGEBACK. Leo’s grand-niece is here to take over the responsibility of the resident Ridgeback.
