A video recording booth invites visitors to become part of the community dialogue by sharing their stories and experiences of identity and culture.

The history of Mexican-American culture and its relationship and coevolution with Los Angeles is complex, and the question of identity has always been at its center. Visitors to LA Starts Here! are asked to share their experiences of identity—both self-identity and cultural identity—in a video recording booth. By highlighting significant themes and posing questions, the interactive engages visitors to join in the dialogue of the community. These recordings become part of the exhibition, and visitors are invited to explore them in the interactive Culture Mosaics throughout the gallery.

“A new focus for Latino cultural activity in L.A.,” Los Angeles Times, Reed Johnson, April 12, 2011

The facility's main exhibition hall contains interactive video screens that will enable visitors to search for information and share opinions about the center as well as a digital recording installation that will allow them to share family stories, memories of growing up in Los Angeles and reflections on what their ethnic identities mean to them. Ken Luftig Viste, curator of “LA Starts Here!” and former chief curator of the Grammy Museum, said that all visitors, regardless of their ethnicity, are invited to contribute.
