The Changing the Face of Medicine exhibition at the National Library of Medicine examines the many ways that women have influenced and enhanced the practice of medicine. Second Story developed twenty unique audiovisual and interactive installations within the exhibition to bring their stories to life, inspiring succeeding generations of women as they open doors, make new discoveries, and change the face of medicine. An introductory video experience sets the stage for the exhibition media, where a combination of group interactives, enhanced artifact kiosks, on-demand audiovisual installations, interactive educational activities, a searchable database, and a Web site all work together to celebrate America’s women physicians.

The sphygmograph interactive uses simple computer animations to explain the operation of a very complicated medical device. The device itself is within a case. In fact, the object on display would be very difficult for visitors to understand without the use of technology. This entry is a very helpful interpretive tool for explaining an obscure but important artifact. It is a perfect example of how new media can help visitors learn in an exhibition, rather than just add noise and diversion.
